The beauty pageant in Puerto Rico was sabotaged last night after a contestant’s evening gowns and makeup were doused with pepper spray, causing hives in her face. Despite this she went on to become the 2008 Miss Universe contestant.
Ingrid Marie Rivera was one of the 29 participants in the beauty pageant in Puerto Rico to
qualify for the 2008 Miss Universe beauty contest. But during her participation, somebody dowsed her evening gowns and make up with pepper spray.
Ms. Rivera somehow managed it onstage before the cameras and judges but once she was in backstage she needed treatments for her face and body. Initially the organizers thought it must have been some allergic reaction or maybe she was nervous, but later found it was due to the pepper spray.
The pepper spray in the make up and the gowns caused her to break out in
hives. And to make it worse, somebody stole her gowns, makeup and credit cards.
After she developed hives she wanted to quit initially but decided against it and stayed on with the competition. She told the press.
At one point I said, 'Am I a masochist?...But I said, 'I am with God and this is my goal, regardless of the results."'
There are some organization and individuals who are against the beauty contest, but they can show a better way of protesting via the web or through the press and give facts why it shouldn’t be held. That will gain more support than vandalism and trying to inflict harm on the participants.
