Last week in New Hampshire, Barack Obama spoke in detail about some of his past. He talked about his experimentation with drugs and alcohol during his high school years. When asked whether or not he ever inhaled marijuana, Obama was honest.
"I did," the senator from Illinois and Democratic Presidential candidate said.
"It's not something I'm proud of. It was a mistake as a young man," he added.
Former President Bill Clinton made the "did you inhale?" question a popular one. Clinton admitted to trying marijuana, but said he did not inhale.
Personally, I don't believe Clinton. Not for a second. Obama, on the other hand, keeps it real. That's one reason I like him.
"I never understood that line (by Clinton)," Obama said. "The point was to inhale. That was the point."
Obama supports medicinal marijuana use. He's open to it if it's "the best way to relieve pain and suffering."
Obama was criticized for his comments about his past by Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who said Obama was setting a bad example for America's young people.
"I agree with the sentiment that nobody's perfect and most of us, if not all of us, in our youthful years have engaged in various indiscretions we wouldn't want to have paraded in the front of a newspaper," Romney said. "On the other hand if we're running for president, I think it's important for us not to go into details about the weaknesses and our own failings as young people for the concern that we open kids thinking that it's ok for them."
I don't agree with Romney's views. I believe it's important for all people, young and old, to know that all the candidates, and even the President himself, are just regular people at the end of the day. It's public knowledge that George W. Bush often turned to the bottle in his younger days. Hell, some people wouldn't be out of line to say that the man is still drinking, a lot.
I think Obama is showing his true self to the electorate, and that's what is most important.
And he's right - the point is to inhale. I've got no issues with Bill Clinton, he was a fantastic President, but If you're going to do it, do it right.
