Robert Knipstrom, 36, died this morning in Chilliwack, BC, four days after he was Tasered by police. To subdue him, police also struck him with a baton and used pepper spray on the victim.
Interestingly, RCMP Constable Lea-Anne Dunlop told
CTV that
We're actually not sure if the Taser did make contact with the individual.
Knipstrom was confronted by police at a rental store, where he was agitated. He had also been observed driving erratically. He was conscious and talking when he was taken into custody and admitted to the hospital, but his organs began to fail and he was put on dialysis.
A statement from Knipstrom's father, Robert Thurston Knipstrom, said:
The family is shocked and saddened by the recent incident between our son and the Chilliwack RCMP. We apologize on behalf of our son to the staff of the EZ Rentals for any distress that was caused because of this incident.
Seven federal and provincial investigations are ongoing regarding the use of Tasers in Canada.
