The investigation of an outbreak of unknown origin in Angola has revealed extremely high levels of bromide in plasma sampled from several affected patients. High percentage of victims are children under 15.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has sent technical and operational support personnel to Angola to work with Angolan health authorities; included in the team are a field coordinator, clinician, two epidemiologists, food safety expert, laboratory specialist, and a logistician.

The team is there to help with the investigation of an outbreak that is of an unknown origin.

On November 19, over 390 cases had been identified and treated at the Municipal Hospital in Cacuaco; approximately 64 per cent of the people treated are children below the age of fifteen.

Tests have revealed that several of the affected people have high levels of bromide in the plasma samples that were taken. The toxicological tests were conducted in Munich Germany.

In addition, samples are on the way to a laboratory in the UK to be tested for bromides.

Bromide intoxication has been one of the working hypotheses being explored by WHO and partners as a cause of the outbreak.

It seems like water pollution may be the likely source for this. They don't even have money for food, why would they go buy bromide chemical, it must be some kind of industrial pollution nearby I think.

I threw the words "Bromide intoxication" into the Google search and came up with this link.

    Of particulare interest:

"Pesticide residues from common agricultural fumigants, such as "methyl bromide" and "ethylene dibromide," may elevate the bromide content of vegetables, but bromide toxicity has not been reported from this source (Horowitz, 1997)."

I have never hear od this before, so I thought I'd do some more reading. If indeed it is from pesticides, it would/might explain a lot.

That is indeed what we need to know, what is the source.

I saw in one article in the newspaper, they said bromide might have come from Angolian Oil Industries, they use bromide a lot to process oil.

Apparently, from what I read this morning, bromide can come from a lot of different sources, but logically, it's something that has to have been added to the environment in one way or another. That's good info though, cgull...I keep learning more and more! :)
