Police in Lewiston, Maine are investigating the thefts of two area restaurants. It wasn't money, food, dishes or silverware that was taken, just hundreds of gallons of used cooking oil.
Certainly not the crime of the century, but maybe more a crime that dwindles down to basic survival needs, Lewiston, ME Police report the theft of used cooking oil from two area restaurants.
Both Cathay Hut and Chick-A-Dee Restaurants have reported the spent oil thefts, and between the two establishments, that equates to hundreds of gallons.
With oil prices now above $3 a gallon in Maine, spent cooking oil is becoming popular as a heat source as it can be filtered and added to fuel tanks for heating.
