article imageIndian villager marries daughter

An Indian villager married his daughter because he said he received divine instructions. His daughter is pregnant now. Police released him because of wrong filing charges, but will charge him again soon.
Afazuddin Ali, 36, is a daily wage laborer in one of the villages in West Bengal, India. He was arrested by the police after the local villagers complained he had confessed to marrying his daughter, who is six months pregnant. He said he got divine instructions to marry his daughter.
The police arrested him but had to release him because of a technicality after they filed wrong charges against him. They said they will file new charges against him soon.
Ravinder Jit Singh Nalwa, a senior Police officer, said it is a very strange case because nobody within his family made any complaints. He said they will be doing medical tests to verify the girl’s exact age and file a strong case against her father. The girl has never been to school before and seems terrified with the situation.
When Ali was released from the court, he showed no sign of remorse. He told the police the following: "I have not committed any crime, don't you see it was God's will."
I don’t think even his religious leader would approve of this. It must also be traumatic for the girl to go through this, especially given she has a child whose future could be very difficult or ruined. I hope the local social services will help her out.
