After a four year investigation, one of baseball's most prominent all-stars has finally been officially indicted on perjury charges related to steroid use. What are Barry Bonds' official charges?
Barry Bonds has
just been indicted by the Federal Grand Jury on charges related to alleged steroids use. The Grand Jury has decided that Bonds, a 16-time All-Star who currently holds the Major League Baseball record for most home runs hit, is accused of obstructing justice and lying during a federal investigation concerning steroid use.
This indictment comes at the end of a four-year investigation.
"During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes," the indictment reads.
Bonds testified that he never knowingly took steroids from his personal trainer, Greg Anderson. Bonds claims that Anderson gave him a substance called “the clear” and told him it was arthritis medicine. That substance, however, turned out to be laced with illegal steroids.
"I'm surprised," said John Burris, one of Bonds' attorneys, "but there's been an effort to get Barry for a long time. "I'm curious what evidence they have now they didn't have before."
Another athlete, Marion Jones, admitted earlier this year that she lied to a jury when claiming she never saw similar substances. Although Jones admitted to lying about ever seeing them, she maintains that she did not know they were steroids.
