Want to quit smoking? There's a moral support system available today, in the form of the American Cancer Society's (ACS) annual Great American Smokeout, held every year on the third Thursday of November.
Smoking, which causes lung cancer and is linked to nine other cancers, is responsible for almost one-third of cancer deaths. It damages all organs in the body and costs billions of dollars a year in terms of both tobacco and medical costs. The ACS suggests a four-step approach: decide to quit, pick a quit date, find effective withdrawal coping mechanisms and maintain your nonsmoking status. Learn more about this addiction and means of overcoming it at the ACS's website.
