article imageOp-Ed: Online Divorce, a More Efficient Way to Dump Your Spouse

Broward County Florida has come up with a new idea to speed up the divorce process, online filing. Is this really a convenience we need as a society? Shouldn't we work harder to preserve the sanctity of wedlock?
Broward County, Florida has become the latest in a growing group of municipalities to allow their citizens to file their divorce paperwork online. The site will help people through the maze of forms needed to dissolve a marriage including offering legal guidance. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel says,
As reports:"It kind of guides you through, it asks questions. Once it knows your name, it will put it in every space it should go," said Kris Mazzeo, director of the circuit/civil family division of the clerk of courts.
The service is intended to help out poorer people who might not be able to afford the help of a Lawyer. Saving people money on attorney fees as well as travel time may not be the principal reason as it will also help out court employees.
As reports: The city may also have some selfish motives in adopting this change of policy. The online application process is expected to simplify the paperwork needed by the county clerks and eliminate incomplete applications and angry customers.
According to, the number of divorces has skyrocketed over the last several decades. The number of married couples has dropped from 72 per cent of the population in 1970 to just 59 per cent in 2002. Add to that the fact that the percentage of population that is divorced has climbed from 6 per cent in 1980 to 10 per cent in '02, (the last year figures are posted for) and you see the decline in old style morals.
I question why making it easier to tear apart families is looked upon as progress. We've already gotten to the point where marriage is looked at as a short term prospect, instead of the lifelong commitment it was only a few generations ago. Being in the early stages of a divorce from my wife I can speak first hand to how devastating it can be. We need to make divorce harder not easier. Couples having a hard time might be able to work out their issues if they were able to take time to deal with their problems.
My one exception would be in the case of abuse. Abused spouses should be able to get immediate divorces if they want them.
Let's do what we can to make the wedding vows mean something again. There comes a point when convenience is too convenient.
