6-year old Ethan LaCrue, of Aurora Colorado, decided that he wanted to collect toys to give to children who might not get any for their birthdays or Christmas as part of a school project.
According to
MyFoxColorado, the LaCrue family gathered new and used toys from family, friends and neighbors.
She collected hundreds of toys. Even neighbors got in on the generosity. The Peterson's walked over two nice bikes that once belonged to their now-adult daughters.
"They've been in the garage. Why not give them to somebody who could really use it?" says John Peterson.
Another neighbor, teenager Jack Ford, brought over a Hot Wheel set he got three Christmases ago. "I want to give it away, so people who don't have toys can take it," says Ford.
After the toys were accumulated, they bought cupcakes, juice, balloons and gift bags to give the event a birthday party feel, and advertised the event on Craigslist. Unfortunately, no one showed up.
"We just didn't hit the right audience. So I just have to be more creative in our advertisement," says Michelle.
The family is holding another event Saturday, Nov. 17, from 1-3 (address in original article). It's a first come, first served event.
This is definitely a kind hearted gesture, and I hope that the bulk of the toys will go to kids who wouldn't otherwise get any. Unfortunately, there will probably be a few people who show up just to get something free. The family might have done better to advertise at the social services/welfare offices, since many families who are on food stamps don't really have a lot of money for toys.
