A Roman Catholic bishop from England is supporting a campaign to legalize brothels in the Southern English port city of Portsmouth. However, he doesn’t condone prostitution and would be more happy if it didn't exist.
The Right Reverend Crispian Hollis supports a local branch of the Women’s Institute which is campaigning to get licenses for brothels in Portsmouth.
Hollis said this to the local newspaper:
"If you are going to take a pragmatic view and say prostitution happens, I think there is a need to make sure it's as well regulated as possible for the health of people involved and for the safety of the ladies themselves."
He told The Portsmouth News that he is not approving of prostitution in any way. He said he would be happier if it didn't exist in Portsmouth.
He said prostitution will be there no matter what regulations are put in place, and it has been there since time immemorial so we have to be practical in our approach.
Rachel Frost of the International Union for Sex Workers praised the Reverend’s comment and said he should be commended for having the guts to boldly share his views.
Personally, I don’t approve of prostitution; I believe ladies can use their talents elsewhere. But if they still want to become a prostitute, I believe they should do so in a safe and healthy environment like the Bishop says.
He may get a call from Pope, but what he is saying is correct. Many other people could have said the same thing, but they didn’t have the guts so I believe he deserves praise.
Do you agree with the Bishop’s views?
