There is a new drug that has been reported that some kids are starting to use. It is called "jenkem". It is a hallucinogen drug which was first used in Africa. It begins with feces and urine.
This drug is made from human waste. The drug is made by fermenting human waste. The feces and urine are put in a container and a balloon attached to the top of the container with the container left in the sun to rot. The balloon is to catch the gas that can then be huffed.

What the side affects could be are unknown as the drug is so new.
It will leave a bad taste for days after it has been huffed.

When the gas is inhaled it is said to give a euphoric high. One problem that is said to be is it leaves a bad taste in the mouth for days after inhaling it.

According to information from the Collier County Sheriff's Office Sherriff's office in Naples, Florida some kids at Palmetto Ridge High school have been experimenting with the drug.

How wide spread the use is is unknown. After this report was seen on Snopes.com WINK-TV News in Fl. interviewed some students at the Collier County high schools.
The students said they had never heard of it and said it sounded "gross"

The Drug Enforcement Agency states that there are people in the U.S. trying it. Seems like the DEA has not tested it yet. Maybe no volunteers. But they say that the drug is dangerous.

Jenkem is used in Africa and third-world Near Asian countries as a glue-high substitute.

That is taking recycling too far, but seriously this is very disturbing.

I found it very disturbing and disgusting.
If you go to the link "Jenkem is used" it is even more disturbing.

Yes, it is disturbing and thoroughly disgusting, but it's good to be aware of... what won't people try to get high?

    Excellent work, Picasso.

    Thank-you S.H. Mills.
I had received an email where it was mentioned. I had never heard of it before so I started to look into it and see if there was any mention of it anywhere.

It is and hopefully it doesn't really catch on.

For those who want a cheap way to get high and can get past what needs to be done there is no cost to it with the exception of possibly having to purchase a balloon.

This is one more reason to end the insane war on drugs and make make safer drugs like marijuana available.

The urge to "get high" is not only universal among humans, but many animals do it too as well. Elephants do it by eating certain fruit, which ferments in their stomachs and anyone who has had a pyracantha bush in their yard has probably seen birds staggering around drunk after eating the berries.

When denied alcohol Russian soldiers use to paint boot polish onto bread and set it in the sun to ferment. Ancient Lapp reindeer herders, who had nothing else to get high with, discovered that they could do it if they drank the urine of someone who had eaten certain "magic mushrooms." Which only goes to show that people are going to find a way to get high no matter what obstacles one tries to put in their way.

Rather than try to stop something that cannot be stopped it is probably wiser to channel it. The first line of defense should, of course, be education as to why certain things are bad for you but since that is only going to stop some of the kids other, less dangerous, alternatives should be available.

As today's article by David Silverberg points out, marijuana does not hurt a teens grades or relationships. The article is worth reading but the point is that this is a whole lot better than some of the alternatives that people will come up with if they have to.

It mainly shows that the war against drugs as it is fought in the US is a profoundly useless one that only benefits organized crime.

That is not exactly true. It also benefits the police and prison guard industry as well as gives social conservatives something to get hysterical about. ;o)

This story has been all over the place but in trying to do more research on it, some media are saying this might be an Internet hoax.

The Washington Post links directly to the Sheriff's office report (opens in PDF) but the Post says:
The bulletin goes on to state that "jenkem is now a popular drug in American Schools." This seems doubtful, to say the least. The ever-reliable Snopes.com, for instance, rates the claim as "undetermined," noting that there have been very few reports of its use in the last decade. WINK-TV News in Florida, which reported the story after discovering the bulletin on Snopes, interviewed students at Collier County high schools. All denied having heard of it and claimed that the concept was "gross."

Still, a spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Agency insists that "there are people in America trying [Jenkem]." The DEA has yet to test Jenkem, he said -- a lot of volunteers for that job! -- but he said it is possible to experience hallucinations from methane fumes. He called use of the drug "dangerous, bad and stupid."
    (Source).

And the very credible Wikipedia says, "Jenkem or jekem is a hoax (so far as its use in the west) originating from emails sent by users of the 4chan website" but proof of this is still needed (Source).

Regardless, it's a disturbing concept and it will be interesting to see what comes out of it.

The popular site Snopes that attempts to evaluate the validity of rumours says this is "undetermined" (Source)

While not untrue, I think that is a bit cynical. It should then be added that it also benefits medical personnel, the various support organizations for drug users...

I have heard they inhale the fertilizer from the field tanks to get high, but this is more bizarre. What do they do when the high gets low, do more again, this is not a solution.

Cgull I cannot imagine anyone doing this. It is just sick.

Thank-you for whoever put the correct picture up. I tried but it wouldn't work. Glad you guys can get somethings done that I can't seem to do. :-)

    Eeewwwww.
If this is not a hoax, then someone must've had some serious problems with stress to have come up with this.
I'd like to see Myth Busters try and debunk this LOL.

Of course it is cynical! It was also intended as a joke. In fact the "war on drugs" is a disaster and should be stopped immediately!

My dear Picasso. If Glen Beck says that the sky is blue I would suggest that you hurry to the nearest window and check. It has probably turned purple with pink polka dots. This man is a pathological liar.

Time to switch to Keith Olbermann!

Just watch some of his comments and let me know what you think. ; I won't be offended whatever you decide. ;o)

    What!!!!
Are you telling me that you don't like that, that, don't know what to call him.

I have watched part of his show, good word "show", a couple of times. But people that rant on and on really get on my nerves so I don't watch him any more.

I get his program announcements and do look over them than delete them.

That is where I saw this subject as I have never heard of it I decided to investigate and what I found did shock me.

Are we talking about Glen Beck or Keith Olbermann? Beck is a horse's ----what was that word that also means donkey?

Olberman, on the other hand is very intelligent and very funny. He is the Edward R. Murrow of today and his special comments make one long to kick all the modern day Joseph McCarthys in Washington in the seat of the pants!

I was talking about Glen Beck.
You mean the word "donkey" that I could not figure out how to spell it with only three letters and the first letter beginning with an A. You know that you weren't any help to me in trying to figure it out.

I have never watched Keith Olbermann. If I remember correctly he does not like Fox News. ;o)

Myth Busters is filmed at what use to be Naval Air Station (NAS) Alameda, where I lived when I was in high school. Those buildings are the hanger's my father's squadron were in and that runway is were I learned to drive. I love to watch the show just to see the old "home town." ;o)

I just checked another source, About's 'Urban Legends'.

This is what they said about this:

No credible evidence has been advanced to show that Jenkem use is widespread or popular anywhere in America.

For that matter, it is impossible to find evidence that Jenkem use is widespread or popular even in Africa, where according to the few mentions one finds in 10 years of news coverage the practice of huffing gases emitted by fermenting human waste was born. Every source describing this phenomenon specifies just one geographical location -- the slums of Lusaka, Zambia -- as a hotbed of Jenkem activity, and there only by desperate street kids who can't afford to sniff glue or gasoline.

There is more that can be read on this including some additional links.

It sounds to me like, hopefully, it is not widespread, but from accounts that I read and the Sheriff's report it has or is being used by some.

It is so disgusting that I don't see how anyone can do it. But then again lots of things are done that I would never do. :-)

Missed you yesterday, hope all is well.

Actually, I got busy doing some other stuff, and then when I wanted to get on yesterday afternoon, we'd lost our cable and interent service! It was really weird because we didn't have any high winds or bad weather...so I don't know what the problem was.

I agree...this whole new drug to inhale is way tooo gross for me! Ewwwww!
