NY Times: 'More Readers Trading Newspapers for Websites'

Today, the New York Times details how newspaper circulations have declined over the spring and summer. Recent figures show a 3 per cent decline in sales overall as Americans move closer to getting news solely on the Internet.
The study was done by the Audit Bureau of Circulations and gives another great example of how news readers are making the change from reading newspapers to news websites.
Newspapers are not losing readers per se, they are gaining them in other areas, if equipped. Most newspaper readerships have climbed with new Internet readers causing the decline in sales of printed papers.
The New York Times reports that a few of the largest papers are still holding on strong actually showing a slight increase in physical newspaper subscriptions but the majority show significant declines on both weekday and Sunday newspaper purchases.
This is the first time that most of the more than 200 newspapers involved in the study have ever been able to take a close look at their home customers vs. online readers.
According to the New York Times reports:
“We do feel that there’s a story that’s been missed here,” said Stephen P. Hills, president and general manager of The Washington Post. There is good news about readership, he said, “but you wouldn’t know that to read the newspapers.”
Surely we can all see the writing on the wall. More and more people worldwide are now getting their news online. In the future I'm sure kids will look back and ask us if they "really used to throw a newspaper on your porch" and similar questions.
The good news is that paperboys of the world no longer have to spend countless hours in the heat on bicycles delivering papers door to door. They can become citizen journalists and sit behind the computer cranking out their own news stories and still generate some income.
