Hollywood scriptwriter Peter Viertel has died at 86, just weeks after his wife, the actress Deborah Kerr, a German television channel reported Monday.
Viertel, who was born in Germany and mainly lived with Kerr in Switzerland, died Sunday in the Spanish coastal resort of Marbella, said Tele 5. The couple had been married for 47 years.
Viertel wrote for Clint Eastwood, Alfred Hitchcock and John Huston.
Among his most famed screenplays were that of African Queen and his adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea. Viertel adapted his own novel White Hunter Black Heart for the screen in 1990.
