article image4-Year-Old Saves Mom With OnStar Call

By Chris V. Thangham     Oct 31, 2007 in Entertainment
Ariana Evans, a 4-year-old preschooler, was able to call Emergency via OnStar and seek help for her unconscious mother. Her brother, 2-year-old Alex, was also in the car.
Ariana Evans' mother Amanda Watkins, 25, suddenly felt sick while driving and soon after she was unconscious.
The worst part was, she had her daughter Ariana and son Alex inside the vehicle. Thanks to Ariana who was smart enough to press the OnStar button in the car and call for emergency help. She also was able to get out of the car seat on her own.
Using satellite navigation, OnStar was able to pinpoint their location and emergency crews were dispatched to the vehicle, which was in a parking lot at Bittersweet Park in Greeley, Colorado.
Ariana told 7NEWS TV station she wasn’t crying or upset during this incident. While she called for help, she sat next to her mother and rubbed her hands until help arrived.
When she called OnStar, she said there was a voice, “What is wrong” and she replied that her mom was sick and unable to wake up.
Watkins doesn’t remember much about the incident. She said she has been diagnosed with a viral infection which can cause dizziness or loss of equilibrium. She lost consciousness because of this infection mixed with migraine medication she took earlier.
For her efforts back in February, the Greeley Police Department just honored Ariana with a Citizens Certificate of Merit, plus a teddy bear and gift certificate to a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant.
Her mother was very proud about Ariana and told 7NEWS in Denver:
"I never knew angels came in the form of children, but that's how I feel about Ariana….She was an angel that day."
Watkins also said she never taught Ariana how to use the OnStar feature; it seems Ariana had picked it up on her own, when she listened to the car salesman demonstrating it.
I think it's amazing she learned to use OnStar at this age. She is going to be a tech whiz in the future.
