article imageArnold Schwarzenegger says marijuana is not a drug, 'it's a leaf'

By Chris V. Thangham     Oct 29, 2007 in Health
In an interview with GQ magazine's British edition, Arnold Schwarzenegger said marijuana is not a drug. He said he smoked it in the past and doesn't regret it. In the same interview, he also said George W. Bush is not a good leader.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, the governor of California, was being interviewed by America’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan where the two started talking about Schwarzenegger's early years.
During the interview, Schwarzenegger admitted to using marijuana in the 1970s. He was also shown smoking a joint in the 1977 documentary “Pumping Iron.”
While he admitted to smoking marijuana at that time, he also said it's not a drug. He told GQ:
"That is not a drug. It’s a leaf...My drug was pumping iron, trust me.”
Aaron McLear, Schwarzenegger’s press secretary, quickly denied the story and said the governor made the comments in a lighthearted context.
He said:
"Of course the governor understands marijuana is a drug. It’s like when he goes on Leno or the Daily Show, if you took something like that out of context, it might seem shocking but it was in a silly entertainment context.”
In the same interview for GQ magazine’s December issue, Schwarzenegger refused condemn politicians who decline to answer about their past drug use.
He said, as long they are doing fine in their jobs, there is no problem. Schwarzenegger said a person may say he did drugs in the past and do a bad job, so current job performance is all that counts.
When asked about leaders who perform well, Schwarzenegger listed former British prime minister Tony Blair, as one of the greatest leaders in history. He also mentioned Nelson Mandela, former U.S. presidents John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan and the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev.
When asked whether he would include George W. Bush in that list of great leaders, Schwarzenegger said he would rather include his father Bush Sr. He said his son does some great things, and some things he doesn’t agree with.
