article imageOp-Ed: George Your Country is South, Not North

By KJ Mullins     Oct 28, 2007 in Travel
A new film being readied for Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C. shows Niagara Falls as one of the natural wonders of the United States. If you take a close look though you may notice a little flaw. The Falls are Canadian.
There wouldn't have been a problem had it not been the one waterfall that Disney film makers choose for the piece. The filmmakers chose Horseshoe Falls, the only one that is on Canadian soil.
Excuse me? Canada isn't part of the United States. They had both the American Falls or the Bridal Veil Falls to work with.
OK, the Horseshoe Falls are a nicer shot, but in a video promoting the United States, shouldn't the footage be something from the U.S. rather than another country?
Yahoo News reports:
"This is not the United States, this is 100 per cent Canada, shot from the Canadian side. This is an insult," Paul Gromosiak, a Niagara Falls, N.Y., historian and author said after reviewing the video at the request of The Associated Press."
Had the video been welcoming visitors to North America, there wouldn't be a problem. But trying to pass off a Canadian landmark as something that belongs to the U.S. may just tick off a few Canucks.
So will that stop the United States from using the media? Of course not.
Karen Hughes, the undersecretary of state for public diplomacy says the video is to be given maximum exposure. They want to make sure the rest of the world knows the United States isn't hostile to foreigners.
As Yahoo News reports:
We have already sent the video and associated posters to embassies and consular offices across the world, where it will greet aspiring visitors long before they arrive on our shores," Hughes said.
"We're going to play it in waiting rooms and at embassy events - and we hope it will inspire many who otherwise might not have thought about travelling to America to come and see it for themselves." she wrote.
Are the States planning something that Canucks need to be aware of? Stephen Colbert where are you when we need you?
