BP fined $373 million by US government

By dpa news     Oct 25, 2007 in Business
British Petroleum has agreed to pay $373 million in fines for a fatal explosion at a Texas refinery, breaking environmental laws and fraud, the US government said Thursday.
The settlement with BP includes $50 million to be paid for the March 23, 2005 blast at the Texas City refinery that killed 15 contractors and injured more than 170 other people.
The Justice Department said it is the largest-ever criminal fine under the US Clean Air Act.
Other fines relate to two pipeline spills in 2006 at Alaska's Prudhoe Bay and an alleged attempt by BP to manipulate the price of propane carried through Texas pipelines, the Justice Department said.
