Author J.K. Rowling is on her first US tour in seven years and gave a speech at Carnegie Hall on Friday night. She said “Dumbledore was gay”, Dumbledore fell in love with the wizard Gellert Grindelwald, but when Grindelwald was preoccupied with the dark arts, Dumbledore felt disappointed and destroyed him.
Rowling said that was Dumbledore’s great tragedy and said in the speech: "Falling in love can blind us to an extent,"
Some of her fans had speculated about Dumbledore being gay before, so this confirms their rumors.
The audience according to E! Online website fell silent initially and then applauded her.
Rowling continued and said if she had known about this reception then she would have told them the news earlier.
Fans on the top Potter fan site TheLeakyCauldron.org
seem to be divided on this news, some are wondering whether Rowling will withdraw this comment, some said it was unnecessary and others welcomed this new information.
One of them, Amanda wrote:
This is even more awesome because it adds another layer to Dumbledore's character, which is already so rich and complicated. I hope he got over Grindlevald (sic) and fell in love again".
Rowling said she was reading the script of the movie adaptation of her sixth book, “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Price” and corrected a passage about Dumbledore reminiscing about his past love and crossed it and replaced it with “Dumbledore is gay” on it.
Rowling, a mother of three, is now estimated to be worth $1.12 billion (547 million pounds), making her the first billionaire author.
Her seventh book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, became the fastest selling book in history when it was released in July. It sold more than 11 million copies in just 24 hours in the US and Britain.
My friend's daughter is a big fan of Harry Potter, but I don’t know how she will react to this news. What is your opinion of JK Rowling statement about Dumbledore being gay?
