A German company said Tuesday that it has won a major order to supply wind power generators to Italy.

Nordex, based in the Baltic Sea port of Rostock, said it would supply up to 44 turbines to the Fossa del Lupo wind farm in the southern province of Catanzaro.

The contract, one of the biggest ever awarded to the company, is worth 104 million euros (147 million dollars), Nordex spokesman Ralf Peters said.

When it comes into operation in 2009, the wind park is expected to have an annual output 250 gigawatt hours, enough to meet the electricity demands of more than 80,000 homes. dpa ms wjh
