article imageRobert Daniels Flees The States To Live In Russia

By KJ Mullins     Oct 9, 2007 in Health
Robert Daniels has been a virtual prisoner since 2006. His crime? He has drug-resistant tuberculosis. He returned from a trip aboard in Russia carrying the strain and was promptly put in confinement at Maricopa Medical Center.
Doctors stated that the 27 year old had endangered others by going outside without a mask. For that he faced years of solitary confinement in a jail ward. He had no phone, shower, television.
Last month Daniels had a radical surgery in which his lung was removed at Denver's National Jewish Medical and Research Center. He was free to go afterwards with the diseased lung out of his body.
Since the surgery he has been residing at a Phoenix area motel under the watchful eye of Maricopa County Public Health officials.
Daniels has dual citizenship, American and Russian. He's using that Russian one now since he fled Sunday to go to Moscow.
He fled because of fear. Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the abuse of his own country.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he believes Daniels was under court order not to leave the U.S. and maintains Daniel's behaviour is further proof he is untrustworthy.
It's good to know if you have a disease that requires confinement that you're treated as a prisoner. Jailed.
I think I can understand where Daniels could have a bit of fear.
