article imageCow in custody in Cambodia after traffic accidents

By Chris V. Thangham     Oct 9, 2007 in Crime
A cow is in a Cambodian prison for causing traffic accidents that killed at least six people this year. It caused two accidents, one a motorcycle ran into it killing the driver and another a truck tried to avoid hitting the cow ended up killing 5 people.
Cows in Cambodia roam the roads at will, forage food on the streets and there are no regulations like in big cities. One of the cows, described by the police as white and 1.5 meters tall, strayed into the middle of a main road last night when a motorcyclist crashed into it and died.
The same cow according to the police was involved in another serious traffic accident when a truck with 5 passengers tried to avoid colliding with the cow crashed and killing five people.
The police had warned the cow’s owner several times to tie the cow but he apparently didn’t heed the warnings. As a result, they are holding the cow at the local police station according to the police officer Pin Doman.
They may arrest the owner also and give him prison time.
We understand the punishment for the owner, but why the cow? Arresting the cow doesn’t make sense; they should just release the cow and give it a different owner. I hope they don’t kill the cow for the owner’s laziness.
