Ever wonder what would it be like to live at the mall? The leader of a Rhode Island artists' coop has been placed on probation for trying to find out. He was illegally living in a secret apartment set up in a parking garage at the Providence Place Mall.
7online reports that Michael Townsend and some other artists started building the apartment nearly four years ago inside a void in the parking garage.
They were really living it up. Eventually it had a sectional sofa and love seat, coffee and breakfast tables, a rug, paintings and of course a video game system. The clever artists built a cinderblock wall to disguise their hideaway.
According to Townsend, members of the collective would stay for up to three weeks at a time. They had plans for a one-year stay, but they fell apart when mall security found Townsend last week and detained him.
He pleaded no contest to trespassing.
Yes, but is it art? I think so. Anything this clever and cool is an art form.
