Concorde auctioned off in pieces

by Susan Keeping.
Parts of the Concorde, the supersonic jet that once flew between Europe and the United States, were recently sold at auction in Toulouse, France. The sale was held from September 28 through October 1st, 2007.
The Concorde at one time was the ultimate in airplane travel. You could fly from Paris to New York City in under 3 hours. Of course, it came at a hefty price. That, and the fact it used so much fuel, cause its demise. The supersonic jets, there were only two of them, flew from 1969 until 2003. It was a joint operation for Air France and British Airways.

The sale featured more than 1,000 items from the planes. Items included cockpit gauges, oxygen masks, a windshield, and a toilet seat. The most expensive item to sell was a 1.2-ton section of landing gear which sold for 26,000 Euros. The sale in total earned 800,000 Euros for Aerotheque, the non-profit association that inherited the Concorde stock.
