Saying Goodbye To The "N" Word
by Debra Myers.
For this funeral service, hundreds of people in the Southern Tier of New York came together to say their farewells to a word that's one of the most hurtful and demeaning words in the African American community. It was the funeral service for the "N" word
Elmira, NY - The funeral service was held at the
Ernie Davis Middle School and included singing and speeches about being tolerant. People brought anything which was associated with the word and placed these items into an actual casket. The purpose of this event was to remind people that this is one word, a horrible racial slur, should be forgotten forever.
“We’re hoping this will be contagious and once we get through with this funeral service somebody out there will say 'I saw that and never again will I use that language,” says Georgia Verdier, president of the national association for the advancement of colored people.
A local youth group was behind the organization of this event. In April of this year, the first "N' word funeral was held in Connecticut, and is now becoming a national event all over the country.
This certainly has potential to possibly bridge the gap between races and erode even more of the prejudices that still exist.
