The brutal crackdown by the government of Burma on protesting Buddhist monks has sparked worldwide interest. On Saturday, October 6th marches will be held in dozens of cities around the world to support the monks.
The marchers will also be demanding the freedom of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi , who has been under house arrest since 2000.
The protests are being coordinated from the Facebook group, Support the Monks' protest in Burma.
The group's call to action states that "We are marching in solidarity with the monks and ordinary people of Burma who are risking their lives for freedom and democracy. We appeal to all religious and secular communities across the world not to look the other way while the people of Burma cry out for international support."
This group, which currently has 192,522 members, lists all the events going on around the world to protest this brutal crackdown, lists ways you can support the protestors, and lists current protests going on around the world.
Facebook has been criticized as being a haven for paedophiles, bullies and criminals. Recently though, Facebook has been used to catch criminals; it can be just as helpful in bringing together those people around the world who believe in justice.
