When two police officers were dispatched to a retirement complex in Windsor Colorado, to investigate an alleged $25 candy theft, they hardly expected a shoot out, but that's what they got.
According to
The Denver Post, when the officers knocked on the door the resident (who remains unnamed) opened the door and began firing a handgun.
One officer was hit 4 or 5 times, 3 in his protective vest and the rest in the lower body. His partner, who wasn't hit, returned fire.
After the man retreated into his apartment, police evacuated the rest of the residents while SWAT teams were dispatched. After attempting to communicate with the man for 2 hours, police sent in a robotic camera. The camera showed the body of the resident. It's unknown a this time whether the man was killed by return fire from the police officer or something else.
The downed officer is listed as being in stable condition and police are investigating the incident.
All of this over $25 worth of stolen candy. I can't help but wonder what was going through the man's mind when he opened fire on the police. If he'd talked to them he probably would have had to give back or pay for the candy and that would have been that.
