Apple is planning to launch the Apple Newton again after the success of its iPhone product. A team within Apple is reportedly working on a newer version of Newton, utilizing the same touch interface of iPhone and Mac OS X Leopard, new operating system.
Apple doesn’t want to rest on its laurels after the success of iPhone; it wants to work on newer models and go after newer markets. They want to revive their once popular Apple Newton model, the predecessor of Palm and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant). It was successful at the beginning but suddenly Steve Jobs pulled the plug and stopped producing Apple Newton. But now after seeing the popularity of iPhone, they want to bring them back to go against Windows Mobile and Palm PDAs.

The iPhone itself is a Smartphone, a PDA, but doesn’t have many applications or programs built in. One can only access a few applications for now and to get the other functions, the users have to access the web like Google Calendar.

The new Apple Newton will employ similar touch screen and interface like the iPhone versions, have copy and paste feature and will operate on Mac OS X Leopard operating system. So, it will have a desktop like feel in a handheld. So, synchronization will then become easy between the desktop and Newton similar to Palm handheld synchronization feature.

With the new Apple Newton, Steve Jobs may be trying to target PDA market and business customers, who are now reluctant to buy iPhones for their companies because of its restrictive use with AT&T.

Mashable.com says Steve Jobs may announce the Apple Newton release as early as next January at Macworld.

Palm should seriously worry about this news, already they are stunned what to do after the release of iPhone, now with Apple Newton it will become a major headache. Palm’s handhelds have plenty of functions compared to iPhone's, but they lack a good design and ease of use, the two things they seem to focus last.

    Sounds good, I'll take 5!

I wonder how much it will run for, but that sounds like a market that Apple can own.

It will be quiet useful, I have a Palm organizer can do 100s of things.

I'm not impressed. It is far too little far too late. If one can get a full blown XP-computer in less than half a kilo, why would one wait for another of Apple's empty promises?

It won;t be as costly as the computer, so one can use it like an organizer like we do with Palm. It is a good complement and comes in handy you can carry it everywhere unlike a notebook.

That's why it is too little too late. All it will do in practice, is being a competitor to pda's and ppc's. I am sure that Apple fanatics will want one, but that will not be because of its superior abilities.

Apple is good at "mainstreaming" products tho. They have a name powerful enough to do so. Maybe it is fanaticism, but I think it is mostly due to wild consumerism.

While pda and ppc are only used by a fraction of the population, Apple has the potential of making the pocket pc a "must have" item.

You are right that it won't necessarily be because of any superior abilities, but it will certainly be decent, otherwise they wouldn't bother. But we still live in a world where brands are highly respected, and Apple does sell.

It may not sell you over, but I have a hunch that will not be the case for the majority and that it will likely sell out on the first day it hits the market -- at whatever cost.

I think that you are 100% right, Nathalie. I see the same thing with the video iPod. When I am on the subway, I sometimes experience people looking with pity at my "miserable" Archos while they are trying to grab my attention with their "vastly superior video Ipod". That amuses me greatly, because I bought the Archos on the basis of a careful comparison between the two, and the iPod was so impressively inferior that it simply did not stand a chance. Not even in the design department. I found the brushed metal cased Archos esthetically far superior to the cheap plastic look of the iPod.
