Canadian star Keifer Sutherland was arrested on Thursday in Los Angeles for investigation of misdemeanour drunken driving. He made an illegal U-turn and failed a sobriety test at the scene.
Sutherland tested over the legal blood alcohol limit of .08% according to Officer Karen Smith. The police have not disclosed what the actual level was. He was released after posting a $25,000 bail.
Sutherland had been at a party for the celebration of new Fox shows this year at Area nightclub. The club is in the same neighbourhood that he was pulled over in.
The crime can carry up to a year in jail although most people do not get that sentence. This is not the first time Sutherland has had a drunk driving charge. In 2004 he was placed on probation, fined $500 and given 50 hours of community service after he plead no contest.
Sutherland is to be appear in court on October 16 for the incident.
Sutherland has previously spoken about his bouts with alcohol. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine published last year, he lamented that he often reacts to gruelling days on the set of "24" by having a drink.
"I should be able to wake up in the morning without going, 'Oh, no! Where's my boot?' Or 'Where am I?' Or 'One of your friends didn't happen to bring my car home, did they?'," he told the magazine. "It's not a very clever way to live, and I don't want to live like that. But it's the kind of trade you have to make."
