Alice Ghostley, best known for her role in "Bewitched" as Esmeralda, died in her home Friday after her long battle with colon cancer and a series of strokes. Ghostley lived a long, full life and was admired by many.
Alice Ghostley was born on August 14, 1926 in Eve, Missouri, and grew up in Henryetta, Oklahoma. After she graduated high school she enrolled in college only to drop out and and pursue her acting dreams in New York.
"The best job I had then was as a theater usher," she said in a 1990 Boston Globe interview. "I saw the plays for free. What I saw before me was a visualization of what I wanted to do and what I wanted to be."
Ghostley accomoplished many great roles. She was best known for her part in "Bewitched" and "Designing Women." She made her Broadway debut in "Leonard Sillman's New Faces of 1952." And also appeared in the Broadway shows "The Beauty Part," "The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window," and "The Boston League." Her film credits include "To Kill a Mockingbird," "The Graduate," "Gator" and "Grease."
Not only was her role as an actress well noted but her charm has also been admired by all of those she met in her lifetime.
