Seattle - Microsoft is to release an update for its Windows Vista operating system in the first quarter of 2008, the software giant announced Wednesday. Vista Service Pack 1 will include security upgrades, improved performance, and support for emerging hardware and standards.

The release of SP1 marks the first major upgrade to the operating system since its debut in January and could trigger strong sales for the operating system in the corporate market, analysts said. Businesses often delay the adoption of new software until after the first large update patch to give vendors time to iron out the programme's teething problems.

"We're really viewing it as not a feature delivery vehicle but a way to fix some existing issues and enhance a few features, some capabilities that are already in the OS," David Zipkin, a Microsoft senior product manager, told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

For example SP1 will speed up the copying and unzipping of files and cut down the time needed for computers to turn back on from hibernate and standby modes. Microsoft is also trying to make Windows Vista more reliable, using error-reporting data to determine the "highest-impact" issues, Zipkin said.

Microsoft said that a "beta" test version of Service Pack 1 will be released "in a few weeks to a moderate sized audience."
