The Digital Journal category is a service channel designed to stimulate discussion and debate amongst the Citizen Journalists on DigitalJournal.com. We created the category so ideas can be shared, improvements and suggestions can be made and so that the community can engage with one another.

We fully support and encourage contribution into this category but with a focus on news, Digital Journal has decided to not include this category for payment.

As of September 1, 2007, any contribution to this category will be done on a Citizen Journalist's own free will -- he or she will not be financially compensated for contribution in this category.

We have had quite a bit of feedback from users outside of the registered membership here who believe the community discussions should not hit the front page as they are not news for a general audience, and that we should not be paying for contributions to that category because it's almost guaranteed they will get a large number of upvotes.

Many other registered members have also shared concerns that the moneypot should not go to fund community discussion as it takes away from payments that go to those who cover news and get trumped by a community debate.

We fully encourage the participation in this channel, and we as DJ Staff will continue to publish in this category as well. The community is one of our favourite parts of this site and we look forward to reading and hearing more feedback from you about the improvements you would like to see implemented. To stay up-to-date on community news and the behind-the-scenes happenings of the site, simply click on the "Digital Journal" category on the menu at the top of the page. The DJ category will not show on the "Top News" tab effective immediately, but you will still see it in "Latest."

Thank you to everyone who continues to give us feedback and help us to improve DigitalJournal.com.

I think this is a great move. The DJ features should stay behind the scenes as they don't reflect the rest of the site. Good idea!

    I agree with moments!

With that category be open to non-CJs, too?

I agree with momentsintime. The DJ category functions like a forum, and needs to be clearly separate from regular news categories. I've often wondered why people should get paid to discuss DJ issues.

I think this is a good idea. It really puts much more responsibility for the writers to find newsworthy things to write about if they want to get rewarded.

I wholeheartedly agree. Community news, and related fun, including tearing each other to pieces, is not exactly news for the rest of the world.

Yes, although the DJ category also served a useful function in promoting Citizen Journalism and providing some background to who's doing the writing. That process, in some form, needs to stay, to explain/promote the process of open source journalism and what DJ does. It adds depth and plenty of diversity.

Muse has provided a lot of very healthy material in that respect, as have others. In terms of value, those articles deserve recognition, and are a real asset to the site. .

I don't entirely trust myself to comment on the high dose of spleen we just saw. My vocabulary's itching too much. Let's just say that as a method of turning people off, it's excellent. Some people were very, extremely, upset. What use was that?

We got an Arts page through the DJ category, in a really good thread. That's what the DJ function should be.

I think they have made it clear what is valued and what is not....

Just what has Franklin been doing anyway? Has anyone seen her lately? For some reason I find her absence very interesting...

    Maybe I should investigate...

Haven't seen anything for ages. I've been doing space pieces, and wondering where she's got to. Usually we split the space stuff between us.

Of course he has, and we want him to continue. The DJ category is the place for those types of CJ stories and it still exists for him =)
