article imageAphrodite Project: Shoes For Safety

By KJ Mullins     Aug 18, 2007 in Lifestyle
The Aphrodite Project is a project that gives sex workers a running edge when it comes to safety issues. The project puts a global positioning system in the high heels that some of the street workers wear to be activated if they don't show up at home.
The shoes don't just carry the global positioning system, they also have noise alarms to frighten away attackers and secret compartments to keep money, keys and condoms. The program is designed to help the girls be a little bit safer in a very risky business.
The Aphrodite Project is modeled after the Greek and Roman prostitutes of ancient times. Those workers enticed their clientele by their sandals and lutes leaving footprints in the dirt to follow them.
The buttons that enact several of the functions of the shoes are located in the heels. They can be preprogrammed to alert other girls or the police when danger is encountered.
One of the ideals behind the shoes is that even workers in the sex trade should have a means of protection. Although sex workers often are in an illegal profession that doesn't mean that their safety shouldn't count. Many have faced danger and sad to say many murders go unsolved when these workers are involved. The tracking device can at least lead authorities to the whereabouts of a missing girl.
