Tuesday, on I-86 in the Southern Tier of New York, Melissa Johns was heading to her home in Savona, when her Blue Kia caught on fire. She pulled off the road and tried to free her two little children as the car went up in flames.
Melissa had taken her infant to her first doctor's appointment in Sayre, PA and was heading back towards her home with her daughter's Izzybella and Sinaya riding in the back seat. Two exits before her own, the Kia caught on fire. She pulled over onto the side of the highway and tried frantically to get her daughters free, but was herself pulled from the car as the car became completely engulfed in flames.
This tragic fire took the lives of 4-week old Sinaya Beam and her sister, 18-month old Izzybella Beam. A third child, Daymion, 4, was with his father at the time of the fatal fire.
Investigators are saying that the cause of the fire was due to holes in the top of the muffler, which then caught the floorboard on fire behind the driver's seat. The
Star-Gazette states,
"State Police Investigator Chris Wilkinson said investigators think the fire started when welded spots on the top of the muffler eroded, allowing hot exhaust gases to escape, burn through the floorboard and ignite the interior of the car."
Melissa and William E. Beam, Jr. had just bought the car from a private seller about three weeks ago, it had passed inspection and they had no problems with it until the fire.

Even as a mother, I can't imagine the grief this woman and her family must be going through, and my thoughts are with them.
