Regal Cinemas Facing Boycott After Pressing Charges Again Teen "Pirate"
by RobotGod.
You might have seen the story going around the internet about the teen who taped a 20 second clip of Transformers on her Canon Power Shot camera. She could get 1 year in prison and a $2,500 fine.
The theater called the police and they pressed charges.
The
Consumerist is reporting that they are hearing some noise around the internet about a boycott of Regal Cinemas until they drop the charges.
As they point out in the article, there is the question of fair use, which some believe it was as it is private, non-commercial use of an 20 second portion of the original. Some also question whether people want to give business to a corporation that will insist on pressing charges on someone who is obviously not the intended target of that law.
I would also say that the punishment should fit the crime. In this case it is excessive and ridiculous.
It is always nice to see people voting with their dollars when they see an injustice.
The real crime is overpriced tickets and especially the food there. Not too mention the crap they shovel out and label a movie these days. They should be up on charges.
