Cheryl Corbin thought she had found a quarter at first, while she was gardening in June. Then she saw the date and thought maybe it was just a bicentennial coin. So she took it to work and showed them.
According to her co-workers began checking on the internet.
Eventually they identified the coin as a 1793 copper "chain" cent. The front features Lady Liberty and the back, a circle of 15 chain links representing the 15 states in the union.
Of course her coin was heavily worn and corroded from being in the elements, but a specialist has informed her that it is still worth about $1,500 to $3,000.
She should garden more often.
Mint, they go for $22,000. Another dealer said that her coin may only be worth a few hundred bucks. Who cares? It's a great historical find. It would be great if she dug up more.
