Prosecutors in New York claim that Michael Anthony, 25, killed his mother after losing his temper because of the poor play of the New York Mets. The incident happened in Queens on Saturday.
Anthony was so distraught at the team's loss that he began to beat on the walls of his home. His father yelled at him to stop and to calm down, which prompted the 25-year old to punch the older man in the face.
Anthony threw his father, Fred Fischman, to the ground. His mother, Maria Fischman, attempted to step in to diffuse the situation.
Officials say Anthony stabbed his mother in the head, with a knife, then chased her into another room where he beat her to death with a hand-held weight.
If convicted, Anthony would face life in prison.
