Keith Richards bio in the works - about time, you’d think
by Paul Wallis.
Keith Richards, who is one of the few guitarists I’d say actually works for a living, has a story to tell. The Elegantly Wasted One is finally doing that. Anyone's guess why it took this long. Maybe he wanted to accumulate some material...
As one of the more mythologized rock stars, he’s been showing up for years doing interesting interviews, but this promises to be something else.
The BBC article is very sparse, working out as yes, there’s a bio, and yes, it’s interesting. That, literally, is the news, so far, apart from the fact that someone thinks it’s “delicious” and Mick couldn’t remember anything worth putting in his own bio. Fans, however, who’ve been waiting for 40 years for a bit of substance to all the substances, and insights to all the sights, won’t mind a bit.
Richards is one of the reasons a Stones album will usually have something worth hearing on it. As far as I’m concerned, he won the musical argument during the split with Jagger. He’s neither a musical hack nor a musical joke, like most rock guitarists. For someone embedded in blues, he doesn’t mind taking a walk outside the color scheme. For a rock icon, he’s more honest than most about his roots and his musical origins. He’s one of the few top grade guitarists who’s never been called a genius, and wouldn’t give a damn if he was.
What I like about the guy is that he does know his stuff, and does make an honest effort to get something done on his albums. That alone puts him in a different league from the “Duhhh… me play a sixth…. Me brilliant…” type of guitarist and other cattle. I’ve been playing for 40+ years myself, and believe me, that doesn’t wash. Richards, in contrast, is positively hygienic.
His website has music, interviews, mixed media, and he’s going to be on Pirates of the Caribbean 3, apparently. Good. Depp needed someone with a third dimension there. So does rock, still.
