To Nap or Not To Nap?

Will a nap a day keep accidents away? Tired and grumpy after that lunch you just had? Are you one that could use an afternoon nap to come back strong and focused on your job?
Do you agree that the parliament of the Republic of Hungary should create a a law on the introduction of the siesta?
In Hungary this is a question that they may actually be voting on in 2008, if the person who proposed it can come up with 200,000 signatures that is. For right now it is still a referendum and in Hungary in the past, only two have been approved but you never know they may just end up with a siesta law.
On the flip side we have Spain and Mexico that already have midday siestas and they are a part of the culture but there are those that feel that this practice puts businesses at a competitive disadvantage in today's marketplace.
In some countries the siesta is a way to beat the heat of the midday sun when productivity is almost nil anyway, while in others the traditional nap is after the largest meal of the day.
"It has been known for a while that people and animals can become sleepy and less active after a meal, but brain signals responsible for this were poorly understood," said Dr Denis Burdakov, the lead researcher based in Manchester's Faculty of Life Sciences. "We have pinpointed how glucose - the sugar in food - can stop brain cells from producing signals that keep us awake.
So that is one study that reasons food is what causes the lethargy and tiredness many feel after a good sized lunch or dinner for that matter. Other studies says that is just untrue, rather it is the time of the day that causes the level of alertness to go down.
Either way here are just five reasons for taking that midday nap that you may be needing, try them out on your boss you never know it may just become a workplace hit.
1. Increased alertness and productivity.
2, Less stress
3. Improved memory and learning capability.
4. Increased cognitive functioning.
5. Better all around health.
Now if you lay it out to them as a possible boost to the business they may just go for it on a trial basis to see if it does increase productivity.
Remember I'm referring to a short power nap here, not the all day laze in bed that some of us dream of doing one day when the world is all rainbows and sunshine.
Now my question is has anyone been successful at power napping while still standing or is being in a vertical position or flat out on your face on your desk absolutely necessary to this art?
