Polish Women Training For Construction Work: The New Female Mystique

By M Dee Dubroff     Jul 16, 2007 in Lifestyle
No, this is not some bad Polish joke. Read on and learn how Poland is coping with the loss of male workers who have migrated to Great Britain and how their women are picking up the slack. No joke. Stand back, guys and make way for some real…women.
Poland is training women to work on building sites because so many men have left to work in Britain. This economic migration of between one and two million Poles since 2004 has created a huge shortage of much needed construction workers. There are simply not enough construction workers to go around and it seemed the most logical move to train the women to fill in the need.
The Gdansk employment agency, one of those now offering courses for women to train as builders, claims it has been bombarded with request from firms looking for construction workers from the newly trained female graduates. One spokesperson said:
"We are just borrowing an idea from the Communists, where women always worked as laborers alongside the men on the farms. We have on the one hand a vast number of companies seeking builders and on the other a vast number of women unemployed in Poland. We can't train the women up fast enough."
Good idea and probably too long in coming.
