Conrad Black Found Guilty

Former media kingpin Conrad Black has been found guilty of mail fraud and obstruction of justice after 12 days of jury deliberation. The 62-year-old could face up 20 years in prison and $1 million in penalties.

Digital Journal — The trial of the year is finally over: Former media baron Conrad Black has been found guilty of mail fraud and obstruction of justice, a jury determined today.

Black, 62, could face a penalty of up to $1 million US. Black's obstruction of justice charge carries with it a maximum 20 years in prison, while mail fraud is a maximum of five for each charge. The sentencing hearing will take place on Nov. 30.

But it could’ve been worse. The Chicago jury acquitted Black on nine other charges, including wire fraud, racketeering and tax fraud.

And Black’s associates — Peter Atkinson, Jack Boultbee and Mark Kipnis — were all found guilty on mail fraud charges.

The Black trial won worldwide attention by highlighting another major perpetrator of corporate malfeasance. As CEO of Hollinger International, Black defrauded shareholders and stole $60 million US from the newspaper conglomerate. Throughout the trial, prosecutors proved how Black and his wife Lady Barbara Amiel lived lavishly among million-dollar estates and grandiose parties. More than 40 witnesses and 700 documents were presented to the jury.

As expected, Black and his lawyers said they would appeal the conviction.
