article imageManhattanhenge: Sun will set precisely on the centerline of every street today

By Paul Wallis     Jul 13, 2007 in Science
Now it all makes sense. Manhattan turns into a henge today at sunset. Unlike the less expensive and more utilitarian Stonehenge, Manhattan has made a move into to the lucrative Standing Stone market by sheer geophysics.
I can see it now. In the quiet twilit moments, a procession of cowled monks from the stern, implacable monasteries on Madison Avenue walk in solemn procession, with sacrificial bagels and an Irving or so for immolation during the following orgy. Rustic fund managers look up from their flocks as that big glowing thing bathes them in a golden light. Derivatives addicts blink at the unfamiliar illumination in their roadside crypts.
Then a little voice, a child, perhaps, somewhere in the frivolous depths of a commuter crowd, says sweetly,
“There must be some way to make money out of this.”
The worshippers shoot him thoughtfully, and the ceremonies begin.
