Former First Lady Johnson passed away today at her Austin home of natural causes. She was 94 years old. The former first lady was a staunch conservationist and defender of her husband's career.
Lady Bird Johnson, former first lady to President Lyndon B. Johnson, suffered a stroke in 2002 that impaired her ability to speak. She was recently released from Seton Medical Center and was at home surrounded by family and friends when she died, according to family spokeswoman Elizabeth Christian.
President Johnson died in 1973. Lady Bird Johnson served as honorary chairwoman of the national Head Start Program and as a regent for the University of Texas. She also founded a Wildflower Research Center near Austin, Texas dedicated to the preservation of wildflowers and native plants.
