Man Claims to be Racist, Homophobic and Habitual Liar to Escape Jury Duty

By malan     Jul 10, 2007 in Crime
Judge not impressed with the mans claims and has him arrested and locked up for his undying attempts to avoid public service. Man could now be facing perjury and other charges.
Although jury duty may be an extremely annoying task and a real great way to mess up your daily / weekly / monthly routine (depending on the length of the trial) it is a civic duty and we are forced to do it whether we like it or not... unless lawyers involved on either side of the case find reason to believe that we are not fit to serve on the jury for some reason.
Daniel Ellis decided to use every trick he could think of to get out of jury duty and actually told the court that he was racist, homophobic and a habitual liar. The court's response? They had him arrested and may file perjury charges.
'In 32 years of service in courtrooms, as a prosecutor, as a defense attorney and now as a judge, I have quite frankly never confronted such a brazen situation of an individual attempting to avoid juror service,' Judge Gary Nickerson told Daniel Ellis on Monday, according to a preliminary court transcript of the exchange.
Apparently Ellis filled out the routine juror form and wrote that he did not like
like homosexuals and blacks. He was later interviewed and backed those claims up. Below is part of the conversation between Ellis and the attorney.
'You say on your form that you're not a fan of homosexuals,' Nickerson said.
'That I'm a racist,' Ellis interrupted.
'I'm frequently found to be a liar, too. I can't really help it,' he added.
'I'm sorry?' Nickerson said.
'I said I'm frequently found to be a liar,' Ellis replied.
'So, are you lying to me now?' Nickerson asked.
'Well, I don't know. I might be,' was Ellis's clever response.
After Ellis admitted that he did not want to serve on Jury duty Nickerson said he believed Ellis was "intentionally trying to avoid jury service." Ellis responded that that statement was true.
At that point the judge had Ellis arrested. He was released yesterday (Monday) but could still be facing charges of perjury for acting like an idiot in court...
