article imageAdvice to murderers: Don't invite people for dinner

By Bart B. Van Bockstaele     Jul 5, 2007 in Crime
A 42-year-old man in Belgium's Verviers murdered his wife and son and put them in the freezer. Months later, July 2nd 2007, he invited a woman for dinner. She wanted to put the rest of the food in the freezer and discovered the body of a woman.
The woman informed the local police and was understandably in shock. She got help from psychologists and the service for aid to victims.
During the search that followed, the police also discovered the body of the 11-year-old son of the woman. Both bodies had stabwounds. It is assumed that the murders happened a while ago since both had not been seen for several months, but that needs to be confirmed by an autopsy. The bodies have been transferred to the Li├Ęge forensic medicine laboratory.
The 42-year-old husband has been apprehended and interrogated. He told the police that the body of the 11-year-old son was stored under that of the woman. He admitted that he had killed his wife during an argument. He has not yet given any explanations of why he killed the boy and why he put the bodies in the freezer.
The man was already known by the police. They have had to intervene several times during conflicts between him and his wife. They had opened a file for partner abuse. The examining magistrate will further interrogate the man and will decide if he still needs to be held in custody.
I think that this type of incident clearly shows that we are essentially still wild animals. It also shows that even well-hidden secrets can become known. All it takes is just one unforeseen event.
