New York Grants Topless Woman Settlement of $29,000

By M Dee Dubroff     Jun 30, 2007 in Lifestyle
In a tale that could only come from the annals of the “city that never sleeps” one woman asserts her topless rights. Read on as she bares all and gets the entire matter completely off her chest
Jill Coccaro, 27, who had been arrested for exposing her breasts on a topless stroll some two years ago, despite a 1992 state appeals court ruling that concluded women should have the same right as men to take off their shirts, has accepted a $29,000 settlement from the city. According to her lawyer, Jeffrey Rothman, she won the civil rights settlement from the city, which did not admit or deny any wrong-doing.
Coccaro, who now goes under the name Phoenix Feeley (one can only wonder how her breasts feel about her new name), remained in custody for 12 hours before she was told that prosecutors were not going to pursue charges.
Her attorney told The Daily News:
“We hope the police learn a lesson and respect the rights of women to go topless.”
Nudity is a private matter. On a private beach or the like, that’s okay, but on a public street? I am all for female freedom of expression and breast-feeding, but isn’t this just a bit over the top? Or is it me?
