article imageArmed robot for police, military, jails?

By Paul Wallis     Jun 29, 2007 in Science
A new Taser-armed robot is being developed for use of non-lethal force. Warrior X700 is a possible contender for the dangerous jobs normally done by humans. Those familiar with military bomb disposal robots will notice a distinct similarity.
Possible extensions of the robot into military roles are the main talking point. It doesn’t yet have autonomous capabilities, which would be the primary distinction between existing remote-controlled unmanned mobile weapons platforms and an independent combat unit.
It’s even been suggested that the robots could take over human guard patrols of property. The robot’s makers, iRobot Corporation, (perhaps an unintentional take on Asimov’s famous book), are manufacturers of a range of robots, domestic cleaning and tactical robots, including one which is designed to deal with IEDs, and a combat tactical system called "Packbot" which is designed among other things to locate snipers and mortars on the first round.
