White House and Cheney's Office Subpoenaed over Wiretapping

The Senate Judiciary Committee subpoenaed the White House and V.P's office for documents about President Bush's warrantless eavesdropping program. Also named were the Justice Department and the National Security Council who have until July 18 to comply.

This is major news. The Congress has moved forward to compel production of the missing documents. Given the recent release and declassification of the CIA's "Family Jewels" documents, there is a strange resonance with history. Those documents talk about the early CIA surveillance programs of Americans as the most troubling to the agents involved at the time. This does set the stage for an interesting constitutional show-down if the White House chooses not to comply with the subpoena, since the Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales, would be the one to enforce it.
