It's Your Birthday Loonie

By KJ Mullins     Jun 27, 2007 in Business
The loonie turns 20 this week. Way back in its humble beginnings it was only worth 75 cents to the American dollar. Times have changed. Now it is approaching the same value only needing 7 cents to tie the value.
The decision to use the coin instead of banknotes was economical. All of the coins are made in Winnipeg. There have been 800 million loonies manufactured in the past 20 years.
“Over the years, the one-dollar coin has become a true Canadian symbol,” said Ian Bennett, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint, in a release.
The face of the coin shows off that lovable loon Canadians know.
