Pentagon officials have taken up to 1500 accounts offline, as a hacker managed to penetrate one of the email systems. US Defence Secretary Robert Gates, said a variety of precautionary measures were being taken.
The Pentagon rebuffs hundreds of attempted attacks on its computer systems every day. Yesterday, they detected penetration. The unclassified email system was taken offline yesterday afternoon, although a spokesman has said the email system did not contain classified information relating to military operations.
There are not many details available about the attack, and officials would not say if the hacker was able to read emails on the system. Mr Gates, is expecting the system to be back online again soon. When asked if his own email account was affected, he said,
"I don't do email. I'm a low-tech person."
